Happy Grandparents Day and Freebie

Well I am sitting here with many thoughts running through my head and smiling at the same time. LOL
First I want to wish all Grandparents a very Happy Grandparents Day, today is your day for recognition.
I too, am a grandmother of 2 of the cutest little rascals. Yes I am a very predjudice Grandma and I very proudly tell that. Now, one of these days I may actually tell you how onery they are, but for now they are little angels. Brooklynn is my oldest and just turned 3 years old, she is learning so many things right now from her abc's to her number's to name's, etc. She is also having a bit of the "I am beggining to be my own person thing".
Daleigh who will be 14 months old in a few days is also learning many new things. She is at that stage where she is trying to see how far she can push and get her way. She is hardly ever quiet and constantly on the move. You need roller skates to keep up with her.
I have to grin when I think of my 2 grandbabies. You see Daleigh is my daughters little one and my oldest child. Tish was always a quiet child, love to read books, watch sesame street, and played so quiet. When her brother came along when she was 6 he was just the opposite, noisy, loud, full of mischief. She was always hollering at him to be quiet.
So I am grinning thinking that Tish got the loud baby and Billy Dale got the quiet one. But, my children will call me and say MOM, you will not guess what your grandaughter is doing, lol. Oh, but I can only hope what they are doing, I hope they are coming up with ways to embarass their parents like my 2 kids did us. LOL.
I know many children do things when they are young that really embarass their parents but let me tell you, if I told you what my children did you would laugh for weeks! I would tell you now but better run it by the kids, they might shoot me if I tell all their little tails. I will not mention names but will give you a few hints. Your in a grocery store and you have been trying to teach your child the difference between boys and girls and they blurt it out for all to hear, or you happen to have on a shirt that snaps down the front and they grab it and yank and there you stand for all to see, or better yet you are walking down the aisle at the mall with one that is at the age that they want to walk not be held or ride and they are stopping every few minutes and leaving a trail of little poopy balls behind them, or one decides they need to pee pee and they do it right smack in the middle of the parking lot!
Oh yeah I can only hope that one day my children will call and say MOM your grandaughter embarassed me to death today! Yep, I will smile and say pay backs are heck! And I will laugh!
So again Happy Grandparents Day to all of our Wonderful Grandparents, remember you do make a difference in your grandbabies lives!

Family History Thursday

I hope everyone is having a great week so far! The weekend is right around the corner so smile and it will help the day go faster.

Last week I mentioned sharing. I guess this is my pet peeve so to speak. If you are researching do you share your research with others? If they share with you do you give them credit?

I sure hope so, what good is that history doing if it is just sitting there on your computer. Mine isn't doing alot of good because so far I can not get my children interested. I sure hope one of my grandchildren takes after Grandma and loves this so that I have someone to pass it on to. I did put out a book for a family reunion.

In the meantime I try to share, yes I get frustrated many times when someone wants everything I have but never sends one thing in return. Now it would be different if they said I have nothing but will help look and get documents what do we need.But I have those that state I have alot of information on my grandfather down but nothing on his parents, I need all of your information. Hmmm, well, I would love a photo or 2 and maybe a few items to go in his file that I might not have.

So, Yes I get so frustrated with this. My theory is, if you want something then you must also give something, and then say Thank You. Share your information, share equally with someone. Give don't just take and then help each other, after all you are searching the same lines.
I know one person in our family research that has alienated everyone to the point that no one, not even myself will share with her at all. She never shares and she always takes 100 percent credit that she has done every stitch of research. Well in the family we know who has done what research and who has shared, there are none of us rich so we take turns ordering documentation to help out, then scan and share files. It is sad that she has done this to us, but she has.

So think about sharing your information. Share equally with someone, and always say thank you, it so nice to be courteous.

"From The Heart" Wednesday 9-3-08

Last Wednesday I wanted to do a celebration of fathers as it was my fathers birthday. Time did not allow for a worthy article to be written about him; therefore it has become todays entry.
I am very blessed to still have both of my parents. My dad just turned 69 and my mother will turn 69 in November. I suppose I judge all men by my fathers standards; and I have to say that not many measure up in my eyes.

I have a million wonderful memories of him, and writing about them all would probably take me a lifetime. I thought I would share just a few of those memories with you.
My father is a quiet man, a gentle man, a loving husband and father. He lost his own dad when he was only 14 years old and it has always amazed me that without a father figure from such a young age; that he somehow fell into the parenting role and perfected it.

I recall my father going to work with pneumonia to feed us. I recall him playing ball with us in the backyard after a long day of manual labor, or tossing us across a swimming pool on hot summer days. I remember how hard he worked, often late hours, many many weekends and of the struggle it must have been to provide for a family of seven. I never doubted his love.

My most treasured gift is a glass bird shaped paperweight that my father gave me on my 16th birthday. He was working construction at the time for a company that rebuilt mobile homes. I had a birthday party and the usual wrapped gifts that my mother had picked out for me as mothers always do. (I don't know of a man that truly likes to shop..lol). I was outside when my dad came home from work that day and he called me to his truck as he parked. I remember that he said "this isn't much, but I found it today and thought you might like it". He opened his hand to reveal the bird in his palm. I can still recall how loved and special I felt at that moment; he had remembered my birthday!

My dad and I loved to fish together. I can't begin to tell you how many times he got in trouble with my mother over a fishing trip that was supposed to end at dusk dragging out much later than expected. I was a sickly child and my mother always feared the worse concerning the night air and dew bringing on an asthma attack. We would drag home damp, dirty and with NO catch and my mother would be fuming mad. My fathers defense was "honey, the fish were biting"..this from a man with an empty stringer..lol. I wouldn't classify us as having been poor. We always had a roof, there was always food on the table; but we lived payday to payday and there wasn't money for many extras. Through horse trading and probably trading out work my dad somehow managed to get us a little aluminum boat. We could catch the big ones now! Well we spent many an hour in that boat and though the fishing wasn't any better, at least we had a change of scenery. Dad and I loved that boat and I was happy for him. He had wanted one for years and he finally had one. We fished several times a week, this wasn't a once in awhile hobby for us, but a way of life.

We had health insurance but copays have a way of eating up the extra dollars when you are raising a child that is continually sick. A time came that I worsened and was hospitalized. I came home with nine prescriptions that I would remain on for several years. I was young and of course did not realize the expense involved with a hospital stay. I do now. A few weeks had passed and I was feeling better and I recall going outside to where my dad was working on something. "Let's take the boat out and go fishing dad" I said. He didn't look away from his work. "I sold the boat, but if you're up to standing on the bank we can go wet a line". I didn't ask why; I knew the answer. I knew what the boat had meant to him and it was at that point that I began to understand the sacrifices that he made for his family. What he didn't say that day spoke a million words to my heart and emotions.

I have a million of those stories that will pull those heartstrings; but let me move on to the other side of my dad. He is FUNNY! His nickname is "curly"; given to him by humorous coworkers referrring to his bald head. He has a fringe of red hair and I don't really recall a time that he had much more than that. His favorite expression is "finer than frog hair". He is adored and respected by everyone that knows him. He has a heart bigger than Texas and a smile that comes easily.

He LIES. The man lies continually and his forehead wrinkles when he is getting ready to tell you a really big one. He lies so often that when he tells you something in truth, you always question "now is this the truth or is it a curly"? Lies in our family are now referred to as "curlys". It is always silly stuff, but it is a daily thing and even after all of these years the family members still fall for about half of them! To give you an example we live fifteen miles apart. If I call and say that it is raining at my house he will top me with "its raining here too; they have the road blocked off and Im standing on the coffee table to talk to you." Things like that. He is Irish and always has a tale to spin!

My father cannot resist the urge to steal a cigarette lighter. He doesn't care about the color and he insists that it isn't intentional; but if you are a smoker at his house and you visit for longer than fifteen minutes, you can count on your lighter being in his pocket when you again need it. He is skinny and I have often wondered how he keeps his pants up with the weight of all of those lighters in his pockets!

My father has taught me many, many lessons over the course of 45 years. The value of hard work and being able to hold your head up knowing that you have given 100% to any task that you tackle. The importance of fairness and a kind heart to everyone that you encounter on your path. He has taught me to laugh and that it is okay to be silly even when you are no longer a child. The pride of family and the family name, and that a man is only as good as his word. The true meaning of our family role and our obligations to that unit. He has taught me that a parent can be a friend to their child; because he is genuinely one of my very best friends. Above all he has shown me that love has no boundaries; that it is an ever flowing spring that never ceases.

I know that the day will probably come when it is time to say goodbye to this man. I cannot possibly imagine my life without him. For those of you that are lucky enough to still have your fathers in your life; take a minute and give him a call today just to say "I love you".

Write down some of your own memories of your dad to share with your children and future generations. So many times we lose the reality of who a person was and these are things that your grandchildren will one day cherish. I hope that you have enjoyed getting to know my dad today. We recently had a posting from an anonymous poster that complained about having to enter a password to get their freebie. Their complaint was that it is too much work and takes too long. It is Saturday afternoon as I sit here writing this. Deb S. is also working on a new post and freebies for our blog. I would estimate that between the two of us, we dedicate at least 50 hours a week to our blog and freebie creations. Why? I would be less than truthful if I said that we aren't in hopes of it generating business on the website. However, that is only a small part of the reason. We are digital scrappers above all else and like you, we enjoy sharing the friendship and creativity that often accompanies it.

Fifty hours a week is a tremendous amount of time to dedicate to writing articles geared to entertain and hopefully teach a few lessons as we go. Many of those hours go into creating the freebies that we give away. This is fifty hours a week that we could be devoting to our families and obligations. So for the poster that complains that our download process is too much work..YOU and people like you are this weeks pet peeve!

If my pet peeve winner of the week is reading this; compare 50 hours of creating time and a complaining reader to your download time; and you will know WHY it is that you deserved an entire post on our blog.

Many years ago when I was first learning digital graphics, I had a website in which we painted avatars for people in a chat program. Of course there was no charge, it was simply a few digital artists sharing their time and talent with others. After four months of hearing complaints and whining I started hitting the delete key, and in a span of four minutes, it all ceased to exist. What had begun as an enjoyable hobby had been turned ugly by those that could not be satisfied. Huge demands of our time and talents and a lack of appreciation for our efforts finally made me explode. Somewhere people began to forget that we were GIVING them something and asking nothing but their patience in return.

I do not know who this particular "anonymous" is. I do hope that he/she has moved on and will not return to our blog. I also hope that our other "anonymous" poster that responded to the post is reading this..THANK YOU for defending us, it means the world to Deb S. and myself to know that someone out there went to bat for us! We LOVE the readers like you that appreciate our efforts.

We try to make our blog as convenient as possible for everyone. As for our passworded freebies, it is for your protection. It assures that our freebie downloads remain safe and hacker free. This benefits our readers above all else, afterall we have our files saved on our hard drives; so a hacker can simply create problems for our readers. It is passworded for YOUR protection.
In conclusion I learned from my delete process in the past. Our blog is here to stay, and though we may hit a few glitches here and there, we love sharing with all of you. There are always going to be a few wrinkles, we aren't perfect; we are human. We love reading your comments and that alone makes it worth our time. Family History Humor and Freebie

Well Deb should have thought twice about telling me to post family history items, lol. Well this weekend is the last so called summer holiday but with gas prices and weather like it has been I am sure there are those of you like me, sitting home this weekend. So, I decided I would do a small post. Well actually it might be pretty long!

I had mentioned my Hodgett line in a previous post. This is my maiden name and a line that took me 5 years to research to the point I am at now. First I remember many, many years ago my father visiting and my Grandmother was with him. While sitting at the kitchen table having coffee one morning I asked Grandma Hodgett if she would tell me some family information on her family. She said she would so I ran and got the notebook and pencil and stated writing what she was telling me. After getting hers I asked her about Grandpa Hodgett's line and if she knew anything about his family since my mother had said that Grandpa's mother had died when he was young. Oh boy, now there ya go with those family stories again. I found out that Grandpa Hodgett's mother did not die whe he was young. Grandma proceeded to tell me all she knew on the Hodgett Family.

Well with raising kids and all the everyday busy schedules my family history was put on the back burner for a while and Grandma's information put into a drawer.
Later when I really got back to researching the Hodgett Family I totally forgot about what Grandma had told me and even forgot where i had put it!

So in researching I started in, asked my father and he told me what he knew, lol, oh yeah. I found out that Grandpa's father was born in Texas and I found him in Arkansas on the 1910 census and it stated that both parents were born in Missouri. So my research for five years took up from the state of Missouri south to Texas and east to the Atlantic. NOTHING! I found nothing for five years I beat my head against a brick wall. I did find where Grandpa Walter married Grandma Rhoda in 1906 but nothing on where he was in 1900 and I could not find them in 1920. The 1920 census was very bad at the library and almost totally unreadable. The 1930 was not yet out.

So I found out I could send for Walter Hodgett's WWI draft record, sent to the Southeast Archives for it, it came back. At this time they still had the old copiers that if exposed to light would drastically fade and this copy was so faded and unreadable, I called them and asked if they could try again and at least write down the info that was on the WWI Card.
In the meantime my father came back for a visit and one day we were sitting there drinking coffee and I started telling dad that I could not find even where Grandpa Walter Hodgett had died. Mind you for five years i had asked this man on the phone many questions on this family and he would tell me he just didn't know much. Well, my father proceeds to tell me what kind of man Grandpa Walter was, that he was quiet and that he only knew of one time of him raising his voice when he stood up and told Grandma, Rhodie shut up!. Was I ever floored, I know if someone had taken my pic my mouth would have been to the floor. I went to stuttering and stamering and I said Dad, you knew Grandpa Walter! Oh yeah did this open up a full conversation in which I could have strangled my father for not telling me these things.

I found out that Grandpa Walter was living with them when he died and dad prceeeded to tell me where he was buried, etc. Five years, five years and my father had more information! I said dad why didn't you tell me this, he said you never asked!
DUH, DUH, I thought that is what I had been doing for five years!

Anyway after about a 2 hour drilling conversation I get on the phone and within an hour I had so much information. Still no parents on Walter but alot of information on Walter. Well the next trip to the library I noticed a sign saying new 1920 Census roll for Crawford County Arkansas had been received. Oh boy did I get a hold of that film. Not as good as it could have been but alot more readable than the one they had and I did find Walter and Rhoda. It did list my Grandfather as Ray and his older siblings and younger ones as well. ALAS, I was thrilled, but what, oh my, it lists him born Texas, yes I knew that but both parents are listed as being born in WISCONSIN! Wisconsin, north, up north, but I had been searching all south. MY goodness I was churning with questions!

The next day even more so because my new copy of his WWI arrived, alot better and the transcribed part as well. It listed nearest living relative as Austin Nelson in Ashtabula Ohio! North, again! About this time I remembered Grandma Hodgett giving me some information on the Hodgett family, where did I put that book. Oh my, we had moved twice since her visit, I know it is here, but where? I proceeded to tear the heck out of my house trying to find where I put that book. I finally found it about a week later, duh she told me Grandpa's parents were from Wisconsin! Why did I not remember that! Sometimes I can be so dense!

Boy had I been researching the wrong area of the country for five years! Now mind you this was before we had internet in our area at all, or even thought about the internet. So everything was done by snail mail or library research. So was this austin nelson an uncle, half brother, what.
Called Dad and this time specifically asked if Grandpa Drew any kind of check. He said yes that was what several family fights was about with my Grandfather Ralph and his oldest sisters husband, was over who was keeping grandpa walter and his check! So I though maybe Grandpa Walter had a social security number. So off I went again in this search. I did receive his SS# and this is what gave me his parents names. Austin Nelson was an Uncle, his mother was Josephine Nelson and Walter's father was Edward K. Hodgett. Well that got me going but there is more to this crazy story, but will tell more later.

Family History Thursday

Good Morning! Well I sure hope it is for everyone.
In researching your family history do you search just your immediate lines or do you search the collateral lines?

Collateral lines are the lines that are from aunts, uncles, siblings and so on. I know many researchers that do just immediate lines and truthfully I feel sorry for them. They are missing out on a lot of information, stories, and possible documents and photographs,

While researching my Great Great Grandmother Josephine (Nelson) Hodgett, I came across a wonderful lady researching her mother's sister. I emailed her and we shared information as this wonderful lady did not know where George and Sarah (Josephine's Parents) had went when they left Wisconsin. In the process of researching this collateral line I received many documents such as copies of wills from
Sarah's siblings that stayed in Wisconsin. I also received photographs of Sarah's parents. I was thrilled to death to receive pictures of my 4th great grandparents.

I received copies of George's Bible that i did not know existed from another source while searching collateral lines. In this information we were able to determine that information on the net was wrong on who George's mother was. If I had not researched these collateral lines I would have missed these awesome photos and documents.

So when you are researching, if you do not research collateral lines, you might consider taking that one night and checking on who might be searching the same family. Email them you may find many hidden treasures by sharing.

Speaking of sharing, hmmm this might be a great pet peeve for Deb to do, LOL, then again this may be next weeks post!

Fay, Fay Go Away and a From The Heart Freebie :-)

I thought that lightening up a little was in order for today’s "from the heart" Wednesday. Things are looking up a little; the stomach flu has passed (no pun intended), all of the relatives seem to be healthy, and the sun is shining :-)). As you are probably aware, we just took a pounding from tropical storm Fay here in the sunshine state. So grab a cup of coffee and take a few minutes out to laugh with me.

There is something that motivates people (non Florida residents) in times like these to bombard my email box with Florida humor. These have been passed around for years (I know this because I have received them following every storm for several years). Humor never grows old, and I still enjoy reading them; and YES... laughing at the reality of most of them. On the flip side, I will still be laughing in December when I can use my grill and do so while wearing shorts :-).

I am a native Floridian and have always felt that Florida is overrated. Not that I do not love my home state..it is home and I have no plans of leaving. However, there are things that you NEVER get used to. The humidity would top my list of Florida misery. 82 and sunny sounds like a wonderful day, but combine it with 80% humidity and it isn't so great. Our humidity runs high more times not throughout the summer season due to the frequency of storms.

Summer thunderstorms. Tourist love to visit our beaches in the summer and as a native I can assure you that you are wasting your hard earned vacation dollars. If you visit in the summer you can almost count the afternoon out for beach time because that water you love, well it has to come from somewhere and it is normally dropped in huge buckets shaped like thunderheads. The ladle in the bucket; oh well that comes in many shapes but if you can visualize the standard lightning bolt then you will know what it looks like. Combing the beach during these times can prove hazardous to your health. (Not to mention you stick out like a sore thumb and might as well have TOURIST stamped on your face).

If you can get past the summer storms and still wish to visit during the summer season, be certain to pack not only the sunscreen; but the insect repellent. That humidity I mentioned? Mosquitoes thrive in it; hungry ones! Tons of flowers in our beautiful state are home to zillions of bees and wasps and they STING! Of course we cannot overlook the fire ants; aptly named because they will bite the fire out of you. Last but certainly not least; that nuisance that we call the "love bug".

So named because they are attached to a mate more times than not and though their lifespan is a short one, they reproduce at alarming rates. It is stated that damage to your vehicle paint job begins in as little as a few hours if they are not removed. I am probably estimating on a low side here when I tell you that you can count on an average of 500 bug splats per outing in love bug season :-). Catch them on a good day and removal could take several hours. They will not wash off, but scrubbing is necessary for each little splat!

To talk about life in Florida and not mention alligators, tropical storms and full hurricanes would probably be anti-Floridian. I have been trying to convince Deb S. to come and visit next year but she has a fear of alligators. Laughingly I have assured her that they don't run rampant in the streets. Uhoh.. gulp..okay so there have been warnings throughout our most recent tropical storm of alligators and moccasins in the streets; so I ask her only to consider visiting in the short window that is not hurricane season.

As for the hurricanes and tropical storms I am adding all of the Florida humor lines that I have received over the years. Feel free to add any that you may have by responding in a post. I cannot give credit to the authors as all have been received in email form, but I think they may be true Floridians..LOL. I have added my own comments in ( ) to the ends of some. I hope that they will give you a good laugh and make you count your blessings. There isn't a place on earth without some negatives and we just adjust and deal with whatever our areas pitfall happens to be. Tornadoes, hurricanes, alligators, humidity and bugs..still at the end of the day; there's no place like home :-)

You might be a Floridian.....
-You have more than 20 C and D batteries in your kitchen drawer.(I keep mine in the freezer, they last longer)-
-The freezer in your garage is full of homemade ice.
-You flinch when you are introduced to a person named Charley, Frances, Ivan,Jeanne, Andrew or Fay.
-You find yourself dropping words like "millibar" and "convection" into everyday conversation.(Doesn't everyone?)
-Your pantry contains more than 10 cans of Spaghetti Os.(and tuna fish, sardines, vienna sausage and potted meat)
-Making coffee on your propane grill does not seem like an odd thing to do.(It can be mastered)
-When describing your house to a prospective buyer, you say it has three bedrooms, two baths and one safe place.
-You are on a first-name basis with the cashier at Home Depot. (We can even name their family pets)
-The road leading to your house has been declared a No-Wake Zone.
-You decide that your patio furniture looks better on the bottom of the pool.
-You have the number for FEMA on your speed dialer.
-You own more than three large coolers.(Well one large and three medium)
-You can wish that other people get hit by a hurricane and not feel the least bit guilty about it.
-Three months ago you couldn't hang a shower curtain; today you can assemble a portable generator by candlelight.
-You catch a 5-pound catfish. In your driveway.(We won't eat tuna fish tonight!)
-You can recite from memory whole portions of your homeowner's insurance policy.
-At cocktail parties, women are attracted to the guy with the biggest chain saw.
-You have had tuna fish more than 5 days in a row.(Been there, done that)
-There is a roll of tar paper in your garage.
-You can rattle off the names of three or more meteorologists who work at the Weather Channel.
-Someone comes to your door to tell you they found your roof.
-Ice is a valid topic of conversation. (Had never appreciated the value of those little cubes before we got pounded with 4 storms in a row)
-Relocating to North Dakota does not seem like such a crazy idea
-Your freezer never has more than $20 worth of food in it any given time
-You're looking at paint swatches for the plywood on your windows, to accent the house color
-You think of your hall /saferoom as "cozy"
-Your pool is more accurately described as "framed in" than "screened in"
-You no longer worry about relatives visiting during the summer months (One of those silver linings :-)
-You, too, haven't heard back from the insurance adjuster
-You now understand what that little "2% hurricane deductible" phrase really means
-You're putting a collage together on your driveway of roof shingles from your neighborhood
-You were once proud of your 16" electric chain saw.
-Your parrot can now say "hammered, pounded and hunker down"
-You recognize people in line at the free ice, gas and plywood locations (This one is laughable; these things are always sold out if a storm is coming in)
-You stop what you're doing and clap and wave when you see a convoy of power company trucks come down your street (Oh YEAH)
-You're depressed when they don't stop (OH YEAH)
-You have the personal cell phone numbers of the managers for: plywood, roofing supplies and generators at Home Depot on your speed dialer
-You've spent more than $20 on "Tall white kitchen bags" to make your own sand bags
-You're considering upgrading your 16" to a 20" chainsaw
-You know what "Bar chain oil" is
-You're thinking of getting your wife the hardhat with the ear protector and face shield for Christmas
-You now think the $6000 whole house generator seems reasonable (A month with no electricity can quickly convince you that a generator at ANY price is reasonable)
-You look forward to discussions about the merits of "cubed, block and dry ice"( My preference would be blocked)
-Your therapist refers to your condition as "generator envy"(My therapist is a Floridian, he suffers from it as well)
-You fight the urge to put on your winter coat and wool cap and parade around in front of your picture window, when you finally get power and your neighbor across the street, with the noisy generator, doesn't get electric (This is NOT realistic; we are Floridians we do not own winter coats and wool caps!)
-And finally, you might be a Floridian if:You ask your sister up north to start saving the Sunday Real Estate classifieds! (NEVER)
-"Down South" means Key West."
-Panhandling" means going to Pensacola.
-You think no-one over 70 should be allowed to drive.(They shouldn't)
-And no-one should be allowed to drive under 70 miles an hour.(They shouldn't)
-Flip-flops are everyday wear.
-Shoes are for business meetings and church.No, wait, flip flops are good for church too.
-Socks are only for bowling.
-Orange juice from concentrate makes you vomit.
-Tap water makes you vomit.
-Sweet tea can be served at any meal. (Darned right it can)
-An alligator once walked through your neighborhood. (Through my yard to be exact)
-You smirk when a game show's "Grand Prize" is a trip to Florida.
-You measure distance in minutes.
-And no matter where you want to go, it's half an hour away.(So true, this is WHY we drive at 70 and above)
-You have a drawer full of bathing suits, and one sweatshirt.
-You get annoyed at the tourists who feed seagulls.(Don't they realize that seagulls fly overhead and that food has to go SOMEWHERE..HELLO?)
-You never use an umbrella because you know the rain will be over in five minutes anyway.
-All the local festivals are named after a fruit.
-A mountain is any hill 100 feet above sea level.
-A good parking place has nothing to do with distance from the store, but everything to do with shade. (Try leather seats in 95 degree heat in a vehicle parked in the sun when you are clothed in shorts and you will understand this one)
-Your winter coat is made of denim.
-You can tell the difference between fire ant bites and mosquito bites.(Yes I can)
-You're younger than thirty but some of your friends are over 65.
-You know the four seasons really are: almost summer, summer, not summer but really hot, and Christmas.(LOL, this is TRUE folks)
-It's not "pop." It's "soda" or "coke."Anything under 70 is chilly.(I hibernate at 60 and lower)
-You've hosted a hurricane party.(Nope, but I have attended a few)
-You go to a theme park for an afternoon, and know when to get on the best rides.
-You pass on the right and honk at the elderly.(That is because they are over 70, driving below 70 and more times than not; they are the snowbird we LOATHE)
-You understand the futility of exterminating cockroaches.
-You can pronounce Okeechobee, Kissimmee, Withlacoochee, Okahumpka and Loxahatchee
-You understand why it's better to have a friend with a boat than have a boat yourself.(YES, my Dad has always said that the two best days of being a boat owner are as follows: the day you purchase it, and the day you unload it on someone else)

-Bumper stickers on the pickup in front of you include various fish, the NRA and a confederate flag.(As well as support our troops and proud to be an American)

-You know what the "stingray shuffle" is and why it's important!

-You dread love bug season. (Oh do we ever)

They tend to drive and sightsee during rush hour. Our biggest complaint is their rudeness, negativity and better than you attitudes. They COMPLAIN about EVERYTHING and we hear "up home we do it like ___. Snowbird by no means refers to all tourists, just the visitors that fall into the above definitions and YES, we hate them.)
-You know why flamingos are pink.(No cheating on this one..give me an opinion here by responding back to this post :-))
-You think a six-foot alligator is actually pretty average. (They are)
-You were twelve before you ever saw snow, or you still haven't.

30 Things Floridians have learned from storms

-An oak tree on the ground looks four times bigger than it did standing up. (MUCH bigger!)
-Even after all these years it is still nice to spend time with Colonel Mustard in the ballroom with the lead pipe.
-When house hunting look for closets with lots of leg room.
-Water from the shower is much colder than water from the kitchen sink, and tastes just as bad.
-AA, C and D are the only alphabet we need.
-The four way stop is still an ingenious reflection of civility.
-Radio can be the best way to watch television.

Tuesday Pet Peeve 08-26-08 Copyright Chaos

Hi everyone. In our last pet peeve Tuesday we covered the complexity of "terms of use" and how irritating they can be. Your comments were appreciated and I hope that you will continue to participate in our pet peeve Tuesdays. I guess I should do a pet peeve day about the way blogs are designed where I cannot respond to specific postings; but I do read and appreciate all of your comments.

If terms of use get under your skin, I think I can top that one with this week’s pet peeve. I thought that we would touch on false copyright claims...GRRRRR. Let me begin by saying I am not by any means an expert on the subject. However, I do believe that I have a better understanding of the basics than the average person. If you have visited our website (Digital Imagery Plus) then you are probably aware that we sell public domain image collections. In order to do so and not get the pants sued off of us; I had to explore the ever changing world of copyright.

As if this subject were not confusing enough on its own; lets throw in the millions of false copyright claims found throughout internet websites. You can see where this can get extremely complex and frustrating. I am going to give some very basic copyright facts in hopes of clearing up some of the enigma for my readers. This information is FACTS that have been taken directly from the government copyright circulars, and I may be mistaken; but I think these folks would have the scoop.

1. What Is Not Protected by Copyright?Several categories of material are generally not eligible for federal copyright protection. These include among others:
Works that have not been fixed in a tangible form of expression (for example, choreographic works that have not been notated or recorded, or improvisational speeches or performances that have not been written or recorded) Titles, names, short phrases, and slogans; familiar symbols or designs; mere variations of typographic ornamentation, lettering, or coloring; mere listings of ingredients or contents Ideas, procedures, methods, systems, processes, concepts, principles, discoveries, or devices, as distinguished from a description, explanation, or illustration Works consisting entirely of information that is common property and containing no original authorship (for example: standard calendars, height and weight charts, tape measures and rulers, and lists or tables taken from public documents or other common sources)
2. Can a work that includes works in the public domain be copyrighted? Yes. However, the copyright protects only the original contributions added by the author.
3. How do I protect my idea?Copyright does not protect ideas, concepts, systems, or methods of doing something. You may express your ideas in writing or drawings and claim copyright in your description, but be aware that copyright will not protect the idea itself as revealed in your written or artistic work.
4. Before an infringement suit may be filed in court, registration is necessary for works of U.S. origin.

I have chosen the above four facts because I feel that they cover much of what the average person needs to know to stay out of trouble; as well as to make their own decisions concerning false claim to copyright that we so often run across here on the net.

I am going to try to quickly give you examples of the above in hopes that you will better understand the dos and don’ts. Lets use our own packages as an example for #2. We have what is termed a compilation copyright on our image packages. This means that we hold copyright on the collection as a whole and well we should. Endless hours go into both securing our images as well as compiling them. If you purchase and resell our package collection we can take you to court and win the suit with no litigation necessary; cut and dried, you have violated our copyright. However, our images are public domain images.

Copyright protects our collection as a whole NOT the images themselves. In other words I cannot keep you from reselling the individual images. Public domain means that the images belong to all of us and we (the public) can use these images for whatever purpose we choose. (For those of you that are curious, anything published prior to 1923 is automatically in the public domain!) We also have packages such as our scrapbook packages that are entirely our creations or those of other artists. These are protected fully by copyright as they were created solely from our imaginations and hard work. We fully own these images. If you use these for purposes other than what we have agreed to; then you have fully violated our copyright.

I included # 3 in this post, because I feel this statement would cover what I see happening in many forums concerning tutorials. Sorry if I step on any toes here, but I didnt create the laws. Bottom line - if you create a tutorial the tutorial itself is copyrighted at least as far as your actual text and expression; however the concept itself is not. Just as a list of ingredients for a recipe cannot be copyrighted; neither can a method of doing something. If there are files included that are creations of the writer then of course those files would be copyrighted; but NOT the method. I cannot use your files in my own creations without your permission, but I can create my own files to use. There are tons of tutorials with the following stipulation..I am the creator of this tutorial and you cannot use it for profit in any manner, blah, blah, blah.

This translates simply in my opinion. If you cannot legally claim copyright on the method, then you darned sure can't tell me that I can't profit from anything that I produce from following your instructions. This is where I bring # 4 into this scenario. If you feel that I have indeed infringed on your copyright then of course you can take me to court. However, your work must be legally registered with the copyright office in order to do so. Now contemplate the above information for a minute. I see three major roadblocks here for tutorial writers.

1. Go to the government copyright website and read what filing for copyright entails and you will quickly see that jumping through the loops can be both time consuming and expensive. The term "government red tape" wasn't coined for no reason.2. Attorneys are expensive. If you have ever hired a lawyer for even a small issue, you can understand why the thought of hiring one to fight a copyright infringement lawsuit frightens me.3. If you get past that huge retainer to an attorney, he/she is going to tell you that you have no case. You CANNOT copyright a method of doing something.

In other words, there are many on the net that are blowing smoke; and many more of us that are breathing it. My money is on the clearly stated guidelines above and I hope that I have made a few of our readers smile with this knowledge. You are now better armed to determine fact from fiction while you surf. By no means am I advocating true copyright infringement; but I know that millions on the net are claiming copyright when they have no legitimate leg to stand on. It can't be infringement if the claimant has no legal copyright claim. It took me a few years of research to figure that out, and hopefully I have saved you some time today by putting the truth out there.

I know that our blog has been chaotic as of late and we are running behind on everything. The other Deb has had obligations out of her control and me ..well between death, a horrible stomach virus and tropical storm Fay..it hasn't been a very good week. Yes, I am in Florida and if you have followed the weather then you are aware of the fact that we are WET! I am one of the fortunate ones that still has power and internet service; though that can always change. We are trying to get back on schedule and hope that our freebies make it worth the wait!

Skeletons in The Family Tree

Well I am late again. I can tell you one thing for sure, I am
getting OLD, lol. My daughters daycare has been shut down due to
ill health for 2 weeks now, so AMA has been going down and keeping
that little ball of energy, Daleigh, my 13 month old grandaughter and mercy
I have found out that I am getting way too old to be crawling
around in the floor. Ah well AMA will survive, I hope!

Well I thought I would talk a bit about being a family history
killer, lol. Oh Yeah, I have killed more family history than you
can imagine. You know those family stories you have been told all
of your life that were the absolute truth!. Well, I have a
tendency to kill those sometimes, lol. It is the unearthing of
family skeletons!

Oh, now mind you my family has many, many skeletons! But, you dust
them off and they all look the same, one thing about it, my family
history makes for very good reading! Kind of like one of those
Peyton Place stories or a good mystery novel. They could make a
show about my family and it would be one of those well what is
happening next, it can't get worse can it, type stories.

So what do you do if you have killed a family story that has been
passed down through generations? Do you tell the truth or do you
continue to write the fictional story in your books?

I do both, I write what has been passed on through the generations
and then I chop it up and demolish it with documentation and my
reasonings for knowing the story could not be true. Then of course
the older generations may never talk to me again, lol.

But most everyone has some sort of skeleton, some may be just a
minor one, such as marrying when they were very young and lying
about their age, or someone not mentioning that they were married
before. Then you have those that had an ancestor or someone in the family
that was a chicken thief, or horse thief. Someone that deserted
the military, or someone that shot and murdered someone.
Did you have an outlaw? My Great Grandfather was put in jail for stealing
fence posts, lol, they were old ones and he wanted to use them for
firewood, but alas so did the man that replaced the posts with new
ones.
